I’ve been charged $79 for something I don’t remember that I asked for!!!
Is it internet fraud? I panicked! It turns out I have signed up for the free trial to Amazon Prime and after the trial period has lapsed, Amazon automatically enrolled me to an annual paid membership to Amazon prime. And oh yes, if you look back at the free trial and the fine prints that follow, they did say they would charge me. Grrr…
I GOOGLED for people who had the same problem. Alas. I’m not alone. I saw plans to sue Amazon and discussions on how unfair it was that Amazon was doing this. A lot of people even said that they will never transact with Amazon again.
The bottom line is that I don’t want to have Amazon Prime. I don’t want the yearly $79 charge…
SO WHAT CAN BE DONE? Amazon Prime Membership can be cancelled easily… and as quite clearly stated in Amazon Prime’s FAQ, the $79 bill can be refunded. HOW?
1 SIMPLY, go to
https://www.amazon.com/gp/subs/primeclub/account/homepage.html
and click cancel account. DONE! You will get your refund in 2-3 days if you didn’t make any Amazon prime purchase in the period you have been automatically enrolled to the Amazon Prime.
2. You can CALL the number:
+1(866)5572820
(I called the number using Skype)
Press
7
And you just give them your email address and request that the Amazon Prime membership be cancelled and your $79 be refunded.
No questions asked. You’ll have your money back.
AND NEXT TIME, read the fine prints
Entropy's Order

AMZ Prime Club,
I had the same problem. They must be desperate at Amazon.com for stealing a little bit more money from they customers. Thanks a lot for your tips

I had the same problem this week. I can’t thank you enough for your advice. I called the number you provided, Amazon just cancelled the account.
I am not sure if I will trust Amazon again. I feel a little disappointed: I really thought such a company didn’t need this kind of trick!
Anyway, thanks again, I appreciate your help!

I too had this problem…so glad that I looked it up and that you had blogged about it. Called customer support and they were extremely helpful and cancelled my Amazon Prime with no problem. I actually had read the fine print and was planning on closing my Amazon account before the free one month trial of Amazon Prime was over, but had forgotten about it. Amazon Prime has been taken off my account and my refund is on it’s way! Thanks again for your help!

Just a f.y.i. Amazon did not scam anyone, 9/10 you wanted free 2-day shipping, which signs you up for prime. which it tell you it will, when your trial ends and then a annual fee will apply. in your account you are even able to cancel prime after trial with a single click off a check box. I didnt know what this charge was either, but i wont sit here and claim there con artists. For someone who buys stuff online ALOT, this would make my life easily, just not the case for me. AMAZON is great, price and service wise. just didnt need prime. AND THEY REFUND SOON AS YOU ASK SO DONT JUST EMAIL CALL OR CANCEL THROUGH YOUR ACCOUNT. ITS NOT A SCAM.

It may not be a scam but there is some fishy business going on. Don’t assume we don’t read the fine print I did not order anything with two-day shipping for the very reason I did not want to join Prime. The last order I made was in February and it was MP3 music with my gift card. That doesn’t require ANY shipping, just a download. I never signed up for a free trial. To make things worse when I saw the charge and checked my Amazon account, it said I wasn’t even a member of Prime. So evidently I paid for someone else.

What a bunch of BS! I am cancelling my account COMPLETELY with amazon. I cannot beleive the schemes these big companies use for a few extra bucks. To top it off I had no money in my checking account when they did this so even if they refund my account, I am still out 27.00 that the bank charged! I hate misleading deceitful practices! For people with a big checking account this is not shit and they probably won’t even ask for a refund but for people in my situation this is a total drag!

They did it to me too, and I live in WA, where Amazon is based, and we are a state where you have to be NOTIFIED IN WRITING before they can charge you for stuff like this. Hello? Anybody at Amazon actually pay attention to the laws in the state they are founded in? Guess not. I used the cancel membership button and I am also writing a strongly worded letter to Amazon about this shady practice. Sheesh. They’re getting to be as bad as AOL (and I don’t even want to talk about how I’m still trying to get my money back from those shysters!).

Same here! I did NOT sign up for a free trial….when I called to get this cancelled, they informed me that a recent transaction made me ELIGIBLE for a free trial. If I had not had issues with my bank account that created a need to closely review my account, i would have never noticed this $79 charge!!!! Unbelievable SCAM–think of all the people they will get this $79 from (without their permission!!!!) simply because they will not see it on their account. Seems illegal to me?!?!?!

I am going crazy about this.
I did intent to sign up for free trial, but I didn’t have any license that Amazon required.
But I was still enrolled…what a crazy~
Now I was charged $79, and no refund, because I buy a nose clip for free shipping~~
and on the next day after I was enrolled( I didn’t know I was already on the board), I still paid nearly $8.00 shipping fee for other items, therefore, I certainly didn’t think that I was a prime membership already, because I still paid the shipping fee and didn’t receive my items in one week. So….How could I know that I was a Prime Membership at that time?
I have no idea about the whole damned thing. All I know that I lost $79, and I have to work for 10 hours on campus to get them back( I am an international student)…..I won’t buy any books and other items from Amazon anymore ……

This is becoming a common theme with online sites, Amazon got my Dad just today. Watch out especially if you use things that also offer “services” like credit watches or reports, my Dad also got signed up to some schlock service to monitor his credit, I was standing right behind him and the opt out was designed to actually opt in!! He had to actually cancel his bank account and start a new one just to stop the charges and the bank cautioned him that they may actually attempt to attach it to his new account!!.

Thanks pal. The same thing happened to me. I’m glad I have Internet banking so I could see the transaction long before the monthly statement arrived. I just Googled the phone number that was on the transaction and found this blog entry.
Canceling was easy. I just hope they automatically credit my account.
What annoys me about this is that I went looking in my Amazon account for the transaction and it didn’t list it. So the only other way I could have figured this out would have been to contest it to my bank.

Hello from Amazon.com.
You can cancel your Amazon Prime membership and receive a refund of
the membership fee if you or your registered guests have not made any
eligible purchases.
Your order history indicates that you have used your Amazon Prime
benefits prior to requesting cancellation.
Because of the circumstances, I made an exception to our policy. I’ve
canceled your subscription and requested a full refund of $79 for your
Amazon Prime membership fee.

SHAME ON AMAZON!!!!!!!!!!!

Just noticed this charge on my card last night and thought someone had got ahold of my card info, was ready to cancel my card. Thanks for the info, have canceled this bogus membership. I don’t order that often from amazon (maybe once every year, or two or three) to be charged $79 for a year. Amazon should be ashamed of themselves!

I too was taken in by this scheme. Saw the $79 charge on my VISA and had no idea what it was for. Googled the phone # and found this post. What an eye opener!!
Shame on Amazon, I always thought it was a legitimate online firm. Honest firms do not have to trick their customers with hidden fees buried in legalese.
Called and and the operator i reached said the membership would be cancelled.

Thanks so much, silverfork!!!! You provided an incredibly useful public service. I googled the number, found this page, called AMZ and requested a refund of $79.
The lesson is well taken: uncheck all unwanted items and always read the fine print. It’s good advice. What a racket – amazon is pretty foul!
By: Naima on June 21, 2009

We live in Denmark but use the UK site and have been caught by this scam !
When we got the email saying they were giving us free delivery in the UK for a month we thought that was good service, even though we would never be able to take advantage of it here in Denmark.
We just happened to check our bank account and noticed money had gone missing, we searched the net using the details on our statement and found it was Amazon – neither of us could remember buying anything for the amount and though someone had our credit card details!
The email fills a laptop screen just nicely, the small small print is about another half a screen depth below the advert – very clever.
Gonna follow the advice of all that have gone before us and try to get our money back.
Has anone not been sucessful ?
Thanks to you all for sharing.

When I press Cancel Membership the next message appears: “You do not qualify for a refund and will not benefit from canceling your Prime membership at this time. You have already chosen to not have your membership renew automatically. You can to continue to enjoy your Prime benefits until your membership expires, and your membership will not be renewed.”
WTF???

By: Geoff DK on August 3, 2009

SOB’s. I just canceled my AMZ Prime subscription, without a refund. It appears that my enrollment period was “almost over” so a reimbursement was impossible. Oh, and that was the SECOND $79 period, since my original charge goes back to 2007.
Total activity on the AMZ Prime service? Zilch.
Great value for the money, Amazon. And a great way to win loyal clients, assholes.
By the way, I only stumbled on this situation because I tripped over it in a year-old credit card statement. Good work jerks.

I googled the number too and ended up here, glad you provided this info. Your blog though says “next time read the fine print” What frustrates me is that I did read it all and after thinking about how unlikely it was that I would remember to cancel before the trial was over, I elected to pay the shipping rather than enroll in a free trial. I was charged for shipping AND enrolled and charged this $79. It is unfortunate that Amazon, a seemingly reputible company, is pulling a scam like this. I sort of think since they apparently enrolled me into this free trial that they should not only refund me the $79 but also the shipping costs that I paid, but who has the time for the battle. Hopefully I will be receiving ,y refund tomorrow. Very inconvenient to be without this money for three days.
Thanks for providing the info, as well as a place to vent.

Actually i bought a book creating a free Amazon account and according to their rules, they charge $79.00 for account bocs free account is for one month. When i told that i did not know and where u mention that stuffs ? then Amazon told that they are refunding money in 2/3 business days !!

I was so confused and worried when I deposited money into my account and found out I had a negative balance….because they took the $79 out of my account I was unable to pay my car insurance and had major overdraft fees on my bank account. Supplementing my message datted December28.
They now have agreed to give me full credit. I received a copy of the original offer. It was obviously written by a very clever Attorney. I did’t fully read the original message and now find we all should have done so. All the options of action to take were in the original email. In my opinion the email should have been structured differently. I have written them and told them so. I also told them the clause and handling by them was below their usual standards. We all were all so happy with the offer that we didn’t read it with a magnigying glass.

By: Ayad Derbal on May 30, 2010

i also was hit with the 79.00 charge.
i had ordered a dvd thru amazon, and used the “free trial” of amz prime to save shipping on the item i purchased, then promptly forgot to cancel it within the 90 day trial period (as was clearly stated in the TOS when i signed up for it) and all i needed to do was as you directed, and i also received from the website:
“Your Prime membership was successfully canceled.Since you have not used your membership benefits, we are refunding your membership fee.”
thank you for this info, and as another poster stated, READ the TOS, and REMEMBER to follow the instructions in it.
SOOOOOO many times, when an item is bought on the internet, there are conditions to the purchase that must be followed to the letter to prevent situation like this from occurring, and people forget to follow the instruction, or are in a hurry and skim thru the TOS without reading it completely, then get mad and threaten to sue, or not do business with this or that anymore, when it is their own fault for NOT following directions, not the site the purchase was made from.
on a side note, during the time it took me to type out this thank-you response, i have already received an email from amz prime verifying the cancellation and pending refund of my 79.00.
have a good day!

I got the same $79 charge, I called my bank cause i knew nothing of this purchase, they gave me the 866-557-2820 number which i searched on line , this is the web site i got back in my search, not only did I copy and paste the website on my search bar, but I called Amazon stating how upset i was that they debited my account for something that I did in fact cancel, I did follow the steps and cancelled again, in my conversation with the rep I requested a full refund and confirmation that the refund is in fact go back into my account. I suggest , cancel at the above website, then call them to confirm that the cancellation did in fact go through, then have the rep e-mail confirmation, This is FRAUD and they need to be put in the same situation as they put all the hard working people whos money they are stealing, $79 was not deducted from my register and I pay bills to, my bank still charges a $39 nsf charge if funds are not there, Its a viscous cycle and AMAZON should give warning if their going to put a guy in debt….PRICKS!!!! hope their CEO reads these horror story’s….

Hi all…
I saw my UK bank statement today n it was the same issue :
INT’L 0055610480
Amazon Prime
866-557-2820
USD 79.00 @ 1.5154
They deducted my 52.13 Pounds. When I googled Amazon Prime 866-557-2820. I got hell of a lot number of pages with the same issue. It is a recurring issue right from year 2008. If they not gonna stop this then we the E-users must screw Amazon… Plz mail all yo friends about Amazon Prime n about its pressure.

There, I found this great site and a great person who can help me out!
Thanks alot man!~ Saved dozens of people.
Someone really need to make a site like that.

I had the same thing happen to me, only it took money from my debit card and I only had about $20 left in my savings account. Basically amazon completely screwed me. I went and cancelled it right when I found out (yesterday) and it had appeared to clear up my issues with the overdraft on my debit card.
Just checked my bank account again today and the charge is back on it and I’m once again over drafted. Really getting tired of this BS from amazon. I’ve been a very loyal member of Amazon.com for almost 4 years now, ordering tons and tons of products through them, but this is getting old FAST.
I hope it clears up within the next two days or I’m going to explode.

I just can’t believe that Amazon can also do things like this to cheat loyal customers. Thanks for the post it was really helpful, I just called the number(866-557-2820) and to my surprize it went directly to a customer representative. I told her about this $79 charge to my credit card, she apologized and happily agreed to refund 100% of the amount.

We were debited as well… I googled it, and one part is video streaming. It’s possible we tried Amazon on our Roku (streaming movies,) and got this FREE trial offer, not knowing what it was. Luckily it seems easy enough to get out of the membership. Overall I’ve found Amazon a decent place to do business for plenty of things. But my daughter also used Amazon to get textbooks, it is possible she signed us up unknowingly.

I got the free trial when I ordered a TV. I saved over $30 in shipping costs and got it in 2 days, and now anything I get from Amazon is delivered in 2 days for free, and never have to pay for Standard shipping.
That could save me WAY more than the $79.
I get access to movies and TV shows online…..but I’ll get my money’s worth just from shipping savings.
I think alot of these posters signed up to get the shipping discount on their order, and forgot to cancel before the charge hit…..and now it’s all sour grapes.
Not Amazon’s fault that you forgot.

Very upset about this!!! My daughter purchased a book in Jan 2012 for a college class. Now in Feb 2012 I am getting charged for a “Student Prime Account” that neither she nor I signed up for. I called and spoke with a rep,
after I stated that I was going to file fraud charges if I was not refunded my
money the rep was very happy to refund the money to me. This is whole
issue has been very frustrating and we will think twice before we use Amazon again.

Thanks for the help, just called amazon and they cancelled the membership. After reading a few replies, I don’t know why people are cancelling, and never ordering from amazon again. It happens all the time, and at least amazon is kind enough to cancel, and give a full refund.
Thanks again!!!!

I recently found a $79 charge from Amazon on my VISA card statement . Apparently somehow I “joined” Amazon Prime. I have cancelled my membership as a result of finding this posting http://silverfork.wordpress.com/2008/05/21/amzprime-club-866-557-2820-us/.
I too must have been misled or missed the fine print as I had no intentions of joining any club.
Other than this I have been very pleased with my dealings with Amazon.

Thank you!!!! I didn’t even order anything or even do the trial! I looked at it to see what it was,say the fee,and closed the page.Didn’t click on anything for it,yet was charged $79! I called them after canceling, just to be sure I was getting my money, and they said I would get it. No problem. Still, what about all those people who might not notice,or don’t check their statements regularly?

I first googled Amazon’s 866-557-2820 and found out I am not alone. Then I called My credit card, the rep frustrated me and told me to resolve with Amazon first.
So I called Amazon, the rep refunded me promptly (will email me to confirm the refund within 2~3 business days). I suggested her to voice to her superior stop this kind of practice which is not promoting their image.
I do not normally check my statement. The charge of $79 can easily sneaked through. What a wicked trick. Can you imagine how many people were charged like this without realizing?

Thank you thank you thank you for making this post!! I was totally freaked out when I saw the $79 charge and was thinking wtf, I haven’t signed up or made any purchases with amazon recently!!! And the charge made me go over my credit limit so I phoned the 866 number to complain, and they said they can issue a refund for the over draft charge with proof from my credit statement. I’ll be emailing them as soon as that thing comes in!!!

Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up.
The text in your article seem to be running off the screen in
Chrome. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know.
The design look great though! Hope you get the problem resolved soon.
Many thanks

As a heads up, before you cancel, Amazon gives you a little box that will tell you whether or not you are eligible for a full refund (ie you haven’t purchased anything with Prime). Read the box carefully before cancelling or whatnot.

As late as 2012 they’re still doing this. I immediately cancelled my credit card thinking it was cloned or something, and it was just a scam from a site from which I never even bought anything! VERY unprofessional.

Just received my bank credit card statenent for Oct 2012. Lo & Behold there was $79 US deducted from my account payed to Amazon Prime, for what reason, I do no know, Anyhow I followed your instructions and called them immediately, and after some checking, they were very appologetic and promised to close my so called account and REFUND me $79 US to my credit card account. Thanks again for your unselfish act of sharing your experience and expertise in helping others to reclaim the hard earn cash.

I was paying my Credit Card and I did’t know I had this crazy $79 charge for something that I never did, How is this possible? But well thanks to You I googled the code and here it is the solution.- I am glad that I canceled and make me feel better, Thanks for post this, You are helping a lot of people and I guess is tons of people that don’t realized they have this charged in their credit cards.

Wow, I can’t believe how many people this has happened to. I never even signed up for Amazon Prime (that I know of) but I have an Amazon account. Maybe I was doing something and accidently hit it or made some kind of purchase and there was a note on the bottom that was automatically checked for “Upgrading” that I didn’t see… whatever it was, I had no record or notification that I was even signed up for it… so yeah.. bit of a panic. Thank you so much for the tips. Hopefully I’ll see my money back in a couple of days.

Amazon is amazing !!
My credit card had this credit, i didn´t know that meant this debit :
Amazon Prime 866-557-2820 NV. $79
Thanks to you, I have my money back, the next day that I made your recommendation.
Wowww It´s amazing how many people have done this, the same thing, I didn´t read the little prints, i don´t know, what happens… but I’m happy now.
I know it was my fault, but I think Amazon should send a email notifying this debit immediately, because, I didn´t know that they did this debit, after a month, with the statement bank.
Thanks again, you´re a angel !! =)
